The move in one sentence: type the left side of the equation as one graph (y = left side), type the right side as a second graph (y = right side), and tap where the two lines cross — the x-coordinate of that point is the solution. No rearranging, no distributing, no sign errors.
Why this works
An equation is a claim that two expressions are equal. Each side, graphed on its own, is a line (or curve). The only place both sides have the same value is where the graphs meet — so the crossing point is the solution. You're not skipping the math; you're letting the calculator do the arithmetic while you do the thinking.
Worked example: 5x + 3 = 2x − 9

y = 5x + 3in the first expression line. - Type
y = 2x − 9in the second line. - Tap the point where the two lines cross. Desmos labels it (−4, −17).
- The question asked for x, so the answer is x = −4.
Total time once it's reflex: under ten seconds — and there was no chance of dropping a sign while moving terms across the equals sign.
Where it really pays: fractions and decimals
This move earns its keep on the exact questions students hate. Take (3/4)x − 2 = (1/2)x + 1:

y = (1/2)x + 1. - Tap the crossing: (12, 7). x = 12 — and you never found a common denominator.
Decimals work identically (0.3x + 1.2 = 0.5x − 0.4 → graph both sides → crossing at (8, 3.6) → x = 8), and so do parentheses: type y = 2(x − 3) + 5 exactly as printed and let the calculator do the distributing.
Can't see the crossing point?
If the two lines don't visibly cross on screen, the intersection is outside the default window. Zoom out with the − button or drag the graph until it appears. Steep lines that cross far from the origin (common in word problems about money or distance) may need a couple of zoom-outs — the point is always there if the lines aren't parallel.
When NOT to use this move
- Trivial arithmetic: x + 3 = 10 is faster in your head.
- “Solve for x in terms of a and b”: symbolic answers need algebra — the calculator graphs numbers, not letters (though a slider handles a single unknown constant beautifully; that's a separate move).
- No-calculator sections: on any paper or restricted section, you'll still want the by-hand skill.
