Short answer: if you already understand most of the math but run out of time or lose points to small mistakes, calculator fluency is usually the higher-leverage practice — it's a small, learnable skill set that pays on dozens of questions. If you're regularly lost on what questions are even asking, content review comes first. Most students in their final month are in the first group.
The two kinds of missed points
Every wrong answer on SAT/ACT math is one of two failures:
- Knowledge gaps — you didn't know the concept. More content review fixes this.
- Execution losses — you knew the concept but ran out of time, dropped a sign, or second-guessed arithmetic. More content review does not fix this. Speed and error-proofing do.
Diagnose which one is costing you more: go through a recent practice section and label every miss. If most of your misses are questions you could solve given unlimited time, you have an execution problem — and execution is exactly what calculator strategy attacks.
Why calculator fluency compounds
The built-in Desmos calculator appears on every math question of the digital SAT and the online ACT. A small set of repeatable moves covers a large share of what the test asks:
- Solving any equation by graphing both sides (fractions and decimals included).

- Unknown-constant (“what value of k…?”) questions with sliders.

- One-line statistics: mean, median, standard deviation.

Each move takes minutes to learn and applies across many questions. Thirty seconds saved on each of a dozen easy questions is six extra minutes for the hard ones at the end — which is where scores actually move.
When content review still wins
Be honest with yourself. Calculator strategy is the wrong first priority if:
- You frequently can't start a problem because you don't recognize the concept.
- Your misses cluster in one topic (say, exponent rules) — targeted review of that topic beats everything.
- You're taking a paper test format where no built-in calculator is provided — check the official policy for your date.
