“Which expression is equivalent to…” tempts you into expanding polynomials by hand at test speed. The overlay test answers it visually in seconds.
The move: Graph both — if they overlap, they match.
Why it works: Two expressions are equivalent only if they agree for every input — identical graphs prove it instantly, and a wrong choice separates from the original somewhere on screen.
The pattern
- Graph the first expression
- Graph the second on top
- If one line hides the other, they are equal
Worked example: Which expression is equivalent to (x + 3)² − (x − 3)²?
- Graph the original as y.
y=(x+3)^2-(x-3)^2 - It's a straight line?! Now overlay a choice: y = 12x.
y=12x - Perfect overlap — one curve, two equations. Equivalent. (Try y = 6x and watch it miss.)
Worked example 2: Which expression is equivalent to (2x − 1)(x + 4)?
- Graph the factored form.
y=(2x-1)(x+4) - Overlay choice A.
y=2x^2+7x-4 - The parabolas sit exactly on top of each other. FOIL without FOILing.
Remember it on test day
Same line, same thing. That's the whole cue — say it when you see this question type and the steps follow.
When this isn't the move
Two graphs can look identical in a small window; zoom out once before committing, and prefer algebra when choices differ by a subtle domain issue.
