Unknown-constant questions look abstract on paper. With a slider they become physical: drag the knob, watch the graph move, stop when it fits.
The move: Type it with k, drag until it fits.
Why it works: A slider turns the unknown constant into something you can move — when the picture matches the condition the question describes, the slider's value is the answer.
The pattern
- Type the equation using the letter k
- Accept the slider
- Drag k until the condition is met → read k
Worked example: For what value of k does y = x² − 6x + k have exactly one zero?
- Type it with k. Desmos offers a slider — accept. (The slider’s starting number is just a placeholder — not the answer.)

k=1 - At k = 9 the vertex kisses the axis. That's your answer — the discriminant never came up.

Worked example 2: The line y = kx + 2 passes through the point (3, 14). What is k?
- Graph the line with a k slider, and plot the target point.

When this isn't the move
If the constant needs an exact symbolic form rather than a number, or two constants interact, set up the algebra instead.
