5 SAT/ACT Question Types the Calculator Turns Into Free Points

The pattern: the test reuses question families. Five of them — fraction equations, systems, unknown constants, statistics, and best-fit models — appear over and over, and each has a calculator move that reduces it to typing and tapping. Learn five moves, harvest points across every version of those five families.

1. Equations with fractions or decimals

(3/4)x − 2 = (1/2)x + 1 is designed to punish by-hand arithmetic. Graph both sides as y = each side, tap the crossing, read x. No common denominators, no sign slips. Full walkthrough here.

2. Systems of equations

Type both equations exactly as written — Desmos doesn't need y= form — and the intersection point is the solution. The only trap is answering what's asked: x + y is not the same as x.

3. "What value of k…" questions

Type the equation with the letter k, accept the slider, drag until the condition happens on screen. Infinitely many solutions? Drag until the lines merge.

4. Statistics one-liners

mean([...]), median([...]), stdev([...]) — the entire computation is one function call on the list. The common miss is conceptual (adding a value changes the mean how?), so know the definitions and let the calculator do arithmetic.

5. Best-fit models

Table in, then y₁ ~ a·x₁ + b (or ab^x₁ for exponential). Desmos returns the fitted values; match them to the answer choices.

The honest catch
